Do You Want to Be a Relevant Preacher?

John Stott, in his classic work on preaching, Between Two Worlds: The Challenge of Preaching Today, reminds us that it’s impossible not to be relevant when you connect all of who Jesus Christ is to our needs as fallen people:

“The One we preach is not Christ-in-a-vacuum, nor a mystical Christ unrelated to the real world, nor even only the Jesus of ancient history, but rather the contemporary Christ who once lived and died, and now lives to meet human need in all its variety today…One of the most fascinating of all the preacher’s tasks is to explore both the emptiness of fallen man and the fullness of Jesus Christ, in order then to demonstrate how he can fill our emptiness, lighten our darkness, enrich our poverty, and bring our human aspirations to fulfillment. The riches of Christ are unfathomable” (p. 154).
